According to LUGNET, the number 30 Universal Building Set was released in 1976 and has 258 elements. Leo-J acquired one in the early 1980s.

But prior to actually owning a set, Leo-J was introduced to LEGO® by his cousins who owned the number 40 Universal Building Set.
